FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
Is the aquarium a for-profit or nonprofit
organization?
Cleveland Aquarium Inc. is a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization.
Where will the aquarium be built?
The Aquarium has not yet announced its new location, but is
considering sites on Cleveland’s waterfront. Keep checking this
website for updates.
Is there any connection between this aquarium and the
original Cleveland Aquarium located in Gordon Park that closed in
1984?
One Scientific Advisory Board (SAB) member was the former director
of the aquarium and other SAB members still care for the fish that
were transferred from the old aquarium to the Cleveland Metroparks
Zoo. This group is much like the volunteers who founded the
original Cleveland Aquarium that opened on Labor Day weekend in
1954. These fish and aquarium enthusiasts have continued to
volunteer their time and talents over the last two decades to find
a suitable site, provide design and exhibit expertise, and help
raise funds.
When will the aquarium open?
Cleveland Aquarium, Inc. is planning to announce a timeline for the
design, construction, and opening of the Cleveland Aquarium in
early 2010.

I have fond memories of the original Cleveland Aquarium.
Where can I share them?
The Cleveland Aquarium website allows supporters to become a friend
of the aquarium by creating their own profile page. This technology
will help us build a virtual community of Cleveland Aquarium
supporters. We’d love to hear why you are passionate about aquaria
or share your memories and photographs of the old Cleveland
Aquarium.
What is different about this aquarium compared to others
proposed in Cleveland this year?
This is going to be a nonprofit cultural institution like the
city’s other world-class institutions such as the Cleveland Museum
of Natural History or the Cleveland Museum of Art.
What will the Cleveland Aquarium be like?
The new Cleveland Aquarium will be a water- and light-filled
experience that will leave visitors feeling like underwater
explorers coming up for air and light after experiencing deep
dives.
The first phase of the three-story facility will contain 100,000
square feet of indoor/outdoor exhibits and amenities organized in
eight galleries including:
• An engaging entry plaza and lobby with public art, fountains, and
gathering areas
• 750,000-gallon open ocean shark exhibit
• tropical freshwater tray tank
• tropical seas plant and animal habitat
• North American freshwater exhibit
• penguins and puffins
• seals, sea lions and otters residing inside and outside
year-round
• a prominent, multi-story jungle canopy visible from inside and
out
• touch tanks for young children
• an intimate theatre for education and research events, and a
large public event area situated between the open ocean tank full
of sharks, next to the indoor-outdoor café, gift shop, and
electronic research/reference library
• special exhibit areas and a wide array of technology will be
deployed to help guide the visitor through an exciting visitor
experience every time
• administrative spaces such as offices, research labs, meeting
rooms, and “back-of-house” services are being creatively designed
for use by staff, visiting experts and community organizations.
Thematically, it will celebrate the evolution of the Great Lakes
Basins and the Cuyahoga River watershed. The Aquarium will be
comparable to Chicago's Shedd Aquarium and the National Aquarium in
Baltimore in terms of quality and unusual exhibits.
How big will the aquarium be?
We are designing a 100,000 square-foot aquarium with exhibits of
fish in their natural habitats. Integral to this institution’s
mission will be science, education and conservation of freshwater
ecosystems.
How will the board raise the money to build the
aquarium?
Financial support to build and operate the aquarium will come from
individual donors, special events, grants from foundations,
government-sponsored research, and business sponsorships.
Aren’t there too many nonprofit groups in Cleveland already?
Won’t this make it harder for them to raise money?
We believe that support for this organization won’t detract from
others with different missions. In fact, we have found that
aquariums have a very broad base of support.
