Established in 1954, the Cleveland Aquarium opened its doors as an
extension of the Trailside Museum, then part of the Cleveland
Metroparks. Built and operated with support from the Cleveland
Aquarium Society, Cleveland Museum of Natural History, and
volunteers, this lakefront facility in Gordon Park hosted 250,000
people annually for the next thirty years.
The original Cleveland Aquarium is widely known for advancing
science in many ways including the development of artificial
seawater that is now marketed as “Instant Ocean” and widely used in
aquariums around the world and for its innovative tank lighting and
exhibits.
Fast forward to 2009 . . . a small but mighty grass-roots
organization has persevered since the closing of the old facility
to re-establish a NEW Cleveland Aquarium. Join us as we make
history in Cleveland by building the first of the next generation
of world-class aquariums.
